World Book Day costume ideas are sometimes all you need, just the inspiration... well, that and copious amounts of eyeliner and imagination.


World Book Day is on Thursday 7th March 2024, in the UK, the literary event always falls on the first Thursday in March. The day is dedicated to celebrating reading and all things books.  Many schools and nurseries across the nation invite their pupils to dress up as book characters as a fun and engaging way to do this. 15 Quick and Easy Last Minute World Book Day Costumes


World Book Day can really creep up on you, and it sometimes feels like you're only just packing away the angel wings, shepherd beards and lobster costumes from December. So we thought it would be helpful to suggest our top outfits for World Book Day that are quick, cheap and easy. Also they don’t require a mad dash to the over priced fancy dress shop or a gamble on how ‘next day’ your Prime delivery service really is. We are also keen to give you some ideas that don’t casually expect you to own a glue gun, sewing machine, half the contents of a craft shop and the artistic talent of Da Vinci. You should be able to trot these costumes together very quickly with household items that most people (or their neighbours) should have.

1. The Snail and the Whale – Julia Donaldson

A dark t-shirt with the snail’s trail of “save the whale” either drawn on with fabric paint or sewn on with simple white stiches. Then perch a snail on the shoulder – make with felt or even a rolled up sausage of of newspaper.

They could carry a whale toy or teddy to finish off the look, if you have one.
