Why does my counselor not let me take ap world
On APs
by Matt McGann '00
To my surprise, one of Marilee’s quotes in my last entry about the role of Advanced Placement (AP) courses in college admissions turned out to be somewhat controversial:
Jones believes that creativity and innovative thinking are taking a hit. “Because students are so busy all the time, because parents think that’s what they need to get into college, and we in college admissions officers reinforce that, they don’t get into their imagination enough,” Jones says. Her remedy: “Let’s free up a lot of kids to be able to do that and not force everybody to have all of those AP classes and all of those activities.”
Here are two of the comments that entry received:
“So, what can our students do to get your fair judgement about admitting them or rejecting them? Hide their AP’s on the application?” — W.L.
“Isn’t taking several APs in the sciences and math a way to show the student’s passion in the sciences? I know many students who take loads of advanced courses because to them gaining knowledge is enjoyable.” — Deepta

What APS should I take my Junior year of High School considering my possible major(s)?
Answered
Hello! I am a current sophomore, and yes I am back again with a new question.
I just learned today that the maximum of APs I can take is 3 only (each year). This year, only one AP was offered (APWH). This is a bit unfortunate however my school offers CTE classes (double periods) which is a requirement to graduate so it makes sense!
The APS offered for me next year is:
- AP Pre-Calc or AP Calculus AB
- AP Chemistry and AP Psychology
- AP Seminar (counts as a science)
- AP English Literature
- AP US History
- AP Computer Science Principles OR AP Computer Science A (counts as a math; virtual during school)
My majors of interest include:
- Computer Science (whether it be cyber security, software engineering, etc)
- Health Sciences (surgeon, dentistry, etc)
I want to take AP Calculus AB or AP Pre-Calculus. But the rest I don't know.
The AP Computer Sciences are online Zoom calls. AP Comp Sci A requires you to take either the bridge to comp sci or AP CSP. I could also ask my counselor to put me in it...
I also believe they let you take one science only, but if two s
How to convince counselor to take an AP course
I am a freshman & convinced my guidance counselor to let me take AP World as a freshman, a year early - am having no problem at all in the class (in fact I’m almost the top student), and I think it was def the best decision to make. If you just want to take the class early to pad your resume with APs and/or do not have all A’s in your classes this year, then I agree with what the other posters suggest: just wait to take the class, college application-wise as long as you are taking the most rigorous schedule offered to your grade level at your HS it makes no difference to them whether you take it sophomore or junior year. However, if you feel you aren’t being challenged enough, or you’re really interested in Psych and want to base your college application around Psych-based ECs then major in something Psych related (etc):
Of course give the GC a copy of your transcript and standardized testing scores. If, as mine does, your school lets you take the PSAT before sophomore year (either the real one or the new 8th/9th one) and you got a good score on it then give a copy of that in too. Have you taken the ACT or SAT before throu

Profiles: Remembering The Teachers Who Inspired Us
This series of mini-profiles focuses on high school and middle school educators who made a lasting impression and awakened new possibilities of self-discovery. All were written by students in Professor Wright’s and Professor Dearing’s sections of the College Writing Lab, which meets once a week during the fall semester.
Saved From Drowning
The worst part of leaving high school was that my favorite teacher, Pat, wouldn’t be there to help me during college. Patrick Cochrane was my music teacher and also my counselor. He was tall and wore glasses and Converse sneakers most of the time. He helped me through the toughest times of my life and reminded me that it was okay to not be okay. Because of him I was able to get through high school and grow as a person.
My favorite thing about Pat is how he would listen to me vent about the same situations, and he wouldn’t get annoyed. He has a lot of patience, which is something he’s taught me to have. Pat made me step out of my comfort zone and sing during talent shows; I wouldn’t have done it if he and others in the music department didn’t motivate
